What is a specialist orthodontist?

A specialist orthodontist is a dentist who has had at least three years further training in orthodontics and is registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) as a specialist.

How long will treatment take?

Treatment can take anywhere between 6-24 months depending on the type of treatment and the complexity of the case. Following your treatment you will need to wear retainers for a period of time to prevent the problem redeveloping.

How much will treatment cost?

Costs will vary depending on the type and complexity of the treatment. This is different for each patient so our orthodontist will give you an estimation at your first consultation. Affordable interest free payment plans are available to help you spread the cost of your treatment.

Will it hurt?

No, your treatment will not hurt. Your teeth may feel tender after the brace is fitted but this will fade after three or four days.

What is orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment involves wearing a brace to straighten teeth and correct the bite. Orthodontists need to be highly trained to be able to identify and diagnose dental abnormalities and facial disharmony. They also need to be skilled in the design, application and use of a wide range of braces.

What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment will help correct crooked, crowded or protruding teeth to give you the smile you’ve always wanted. Treatment will also help improve your oral hygiene. Straight teeth are easier to clean so orthodontic treatment can help prevent conditions such as tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath and tooth loss.

Can anybody be treated?

Yes, orthodontic treatment is available to everyone between the ages of 7 and 70. At Stoke Orthodontic Services we treat children, teenagers and adults, although treatment is more effective during the early teenage years as the jaw is still developing.

Will I need to have teeth taken out?

Thanks to developments in orthodontic techniques in the vast majority of cases you will not need to have any teeth taken out. In certain rare cases teeth may need to be extracted; however, the orthodontist will talk you though your options and explain the process in detail.

What will happen at my first appointment?

Your initial consultation will take around 20-30 minutes. At this stage we will focus on identifying issues, planning your treatment and discussing any concerns you may have. Your braces will not be fitted during this visit but we will discuss your treatment plan in detail.

What will my treatment consist of?

Your treatment will involve wearing a custom-made brace designed specifically to fit your teeth. Depending on the treatment your brace will either move teeth into position, guide jaw growth or widen your jaw to make room for crowded teeth.

Will the brace affect my speech?

No, in most cases your brace will not affect your speech. You may experience a temporary change in speech with lingual braces, but this will disappear after a few days once you’re used to the brace.

Will I be able to clean my teeth?

During your treatment you will need to ensure you keep a healthy brushing routine. You should spend longer cleaning your teeth to maintain a good standard of oral hygiene as this will achieve the best results. We offer removable braces which can be taken out to help you brush and floss.
